Three students attended the Summit Singularity University (Sevilla)

Our trip to Sevilla took place from 11 to 14 March, and our purpose was to attend a conference SUSummit. This conference was organized by Singularity University. It is a benefit corporation headquartered at NASA´s research campus. It provides educational programs, innovative partnerships and a startup accelerator to help individuals, businesses, institutions and investors. Also it explains how to utilize these technologies to positively impact billions of people.

The first day was devoted to new technologies. It started with presentation of Rob Nail he is known as CEO and Associate founder of Singularity University, he is an investigator of innovations and creator of robotics and automation equipment for cancer and drug researches.

2

We had a session about Artificial Intelligence (AI) presented by Neil Jacobstein. AI is an academic field of study and it’s represented by machines or software, which use deep learning algorithm.  Artificial Intelligence is a collection of pattern recognition techniques used to solve practical business and technical problems. It is a subfield of computer science focusing on design of systems that observe, reason, act, learn and cooperate. Neil Jacobstein explained to us that it is good at perceptions but bad at concepts.

Also this day we saw the latest improvements and creations in robotics. This augments human skills, improves prediction accuracy and expands the range of possibilities! Our future is based on digital manufacturing, however it doesn’t means that robotics will replace humanity from working. Nowadays, processing of robotics is increasing, while cost is decreasing. Our technology has rapidly and significantly advanced in the last decade and we were able to see new inventions, for example the autonomous cars.

Last innovations include the nexus network and hybridization of artificial neural networks and particle swarm optimization methods for time series forecasting. Everything has an exponential impact. Arthur Schopenhauer said: “The task is not so much to see what no one has yet seen, but to think what nobody has yet thought about that which everybody sees”

It was a very intense day of congress, we learned a lot of things, but we also completed the day with a cultural visit to Sevilla. We saw a lot of sights in this beautiful city, and to be honest, Sevilla exceeded our expectations!

The second day we attended sessions about developments in digital biology and medicine. Our future is based on genetic engineering, which is related to software development, and digital manufacturing. We saw how quickly these changes are happening right now by down-to-earth examples. Sessions were given by Raymond McCauly, he explore how applying technology to life is affecting every one of us, Daniel Kraft and Anders Hvid. We were impressed with the progress of technology when we saw a live presentation by Nigel Ackland. He has experienced and felt bionic technology. When he lost his natural right hand he was the first person to try this prosthesis. It permits him to manage and control his hand with mental thoughts.

After lunch Amin Toufani explained to us exponential strategy. It contains three steps. Firstly, it’s education strategy. It is very important to adapt to new situations, we have to be open to receive information. Then we have to innovate away from the core. It includes portfolio strategy, which means that we have to be able to be original and imaginative: “The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas” – Linus Pauling

And finally, we have to engage with the world. Exponential technologies and organizations are action ítems: “Technology is just a tool, people give it a purpose.”

The last performance was given by Ramez Naam, when we learned a lot about energetic advances. In today’s world we are exposed to climate changes.  In the mid century solar power is the largest source of energy and for the last 40 years the cost of it has decreased significantly. We learned that we have to adapt for a gap between demand and production. He reminded us that crisis can offer danger with opportunity.

On our second day of congress we finished at 15:00 and then we took a car and made our way to the coast of Atlantic Ocean. The journey took about one hour. We have seen beautiful sights of the beach´s natural rocks and the surrounded forests and parks. It was impressive! We went to a typical village Osuna (Sevilla). We visited a beautiful churches and cultural and historical monuments, and walked through the lovely and quiet streets. In the evening we took a plane and came back to Barcelona.

These four days in Sevilla were very intensive. We saw and learned a lot of things. It was an unforgettable experience and another proof of how interesting is to learn new things and visit new places. It also showed us how important is to coexist and be connected with the contemporary world.
